"Painted Masks" is a project that is inspired by hazy memories of growing up in Indonesia. Traveling with family through across Java, Bali, and Sumatra, I recall being intrigued by the masks that locals hung on their wall. Some masks were exaggerated in its facial expression and forms. Fascinated by its function to conceal, protect, perform, and to amuse, I painted these masks out of a desire to realize characters with made up personalities and names (Freja, Shu, Jeom, Julep, Notte, and Jardin). The masks were then shot with Fuji Instax Polaroid camera to simulate the blurry past.
